Did you know that Heathrow Airport in London is the UK's largest and busiest airport as well as being the busiest airport in Europe and the seventh busiest in the world based on passenger traffic? According to google Terminal 5 at London Heathrow is the busiest airport terminal in the UK, with over 32 million passengers each year. This is more than Edinburgh Airport and Birmingham Airport combined.
Heathrow Airport’s mission is ‘making every journey better’. With the steep increase in the demand for travelling by air since the pandemic it is critical that the airports infrastructure is in tip-top condition, this is to ensure that the passengers have a positive experience from door to door – entrance to exit in both directions.
Did you know that there are over 500 recessed pit covers in the pedestrian plaza at Heathrow terminal 5? Nearly all these covers had corroded so badly that they were a trip hazard. Trip hazards cause injuries and with a daily average of 219, 458 passengers and airline staff coming through the terminal and walking over these covers it was critical to have these replaced to minimise the hazards.
So, KITE Projects were asked to analyse the situation and engineer a workable solution. London Heathrow and its contractors were impressed with the unique expertise in infrastructure that KITE Projects had to offer. Along with some design collaborations KITE Projects were given the opportunity to replace the covers that were causing a risk to the 1000’s of passengers. The end solution contracted with durability and high-quality finished 316 stainless steel with a 115kn loading for maintenance, repair vehicles and emergency vehicles.
With each cover that was replaced and removed the safety increased and the risk of trips, slips and injuries decreased for all passengers and workers at Heathrow Airport.
KITE Projects are solution providers and believe in helping to ‘make every journey better’ – from where it starts at the carpark to the terminal, through customs, into duty free, right through to the gate and boarding of the plane and reaching your destination safely.
