The installation of conventional systems is not only difficult and dangerous, but once constructed, masonry and wooden staircases become slippery and dangerous with the build-up of leaf matter and water or ice in the winter. This is illustrated by the photos below. The accumulation of moisture and plant matter results in wooden steps rotting and concrete steps with a build-up of debris, both representing a serious risk of injury from slipping and falling for the operatives and engineers using the steps.
Conventional systems require excavating a footing, (usually involving the manoeuvring of an excavator on slopes which is difficult and dangerous) transporting heavy loads of brick and concrete up and down the slope and constructing a masonry staircase. This method requires several work shifts and the associated cost of labour, equipment and traffic management systems.
There had to be a better way...
The solution - KITEStep
So we designed KITEStep; a modular system of high strength steel runners and treads that weigh less than 50 kg* per component and can be installed and is ready for use immediately upon completion. The only excavation required is for the posts that hold the system in position which can be done without the use of machinery. Adjustable treads mean that virtually any angle of slope can be accommodated, and the pre-cut finished components can be assembled using hand tools. Landings are available to enable a rest period or change of direction.

KITEStep helps to achieve sustainability as the steel components are fully recyclable at the end of their product life, and could possibly be re-positioned to a new location. In comparison traditional construction methods, for example brick and concrete, are considerably less sustainable options.
